We’re still in the lounge-chair-and-pool vacay mode, but there’re events/items on the UES horizon that need our attention/adding to our calendars…  To wit:


Event #1:

Saturday, September 11th: Twentieth Remembrance 9/11 Sunrise Ceremony –  From Darkness to Light

John Finley Walk at top of 86th Street Stairs in Carl Schurz Park, 6:45am  (Wheelchair access at 84th & 87th Streets)

And we quote, ‘A community commemorative event showcasing music, poetry and reflections at dawn on September 11th. The Ceremony reawakens a tradition from the first years after 9/11 that drew together people from across the community and city.”   Social distancing observed but all are welcome.  For more

Event #2:


Saturday, September 18th:  The 42nd Green Thumb Harvest Fair
342 Pleasant Avenue between 118th & 119th Streets (one block east of First Avenue),East Harlem, 11am-3pm

And again we quote, “Celebrate GreenThumb gardeners as the community gardening season comes to a close with workshops, cooking demonstrations, greening partners, and more! This FREE family friendly event will also include art, music, games, and a chance to enjoy the day at Pleasant Village Community Garden.”  For more

Event #3:

Saturday, September 18th to Monday, December 1st:  The Photoville Festival Art Exhibition
100th to 102nd Streets on The East River Esplanade (enter The Esplanade at 96th, 103rd or 111th Streets), View At Your Convenience Any Time

It’s Photoville ‘s 10th Anniversary and they’re celebrating it on the our Esplanade with a display of works by acclaimed photographer (and NYC resident) Lola Flash!!  Sponsored by Friends of the East River Esplanade and absolutely free!!

The Aycock Pavilion, East River Esplanade at 60th Street

A different, great band each week…  With the same great refreshments by Newyorkina, sound by Full Stock Productions and fun for all ages every week!! Free and yet more fun brought to us by Friends of the East River Esplanade!!

Event #7:

Thursday, October 7th: 
 Live Virtual Reading of “Are You a Cheeseburger?”

Laugh-out-loud humor and a tender friendship blossom in author-illustrator Monica Arnaldo’s charming picture book about a lonely raccoon and a glowing seed, and the world’s most important question: Can this seed grow cheeseburgers?  Read by Ms. Arnaldo and perfect for 3-5 year-old listeners!!  Presented by the great NYC H2O.  Free.  To sign up

Just over the horizon: 

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade with in person viewing on November 25th…   NYS’s ban on expanded polystyrene foam containers and loose fill packaging – AKA  “packing peanuts’  – goes into effect 1/1/2022…

You bet, some activism, too: 

Should you oppose construction of a giant fossil fuel-powered power plant just across the East River in Astoria… 

If you object to the Blood Center’s up-zoning plan, do get on the record/add to the head count with an email to CM Kallos
