Monthly Archives: September 2020

Dear Upper East Siders,

How about some good news??

*Not under Upper Green Side’s banner, but UES Ridgewood Savings Bank branch’s scheduled a shredding event this coming Saturday:

Saturday, September 26th:  Free Shred Event
Ridgewood Savings Bank  Yorkville Branch, 1646 First Avenue, 9am-1pm

The Ridgewood Bank advises:  “Shred your personal documents securely…FREE!!  No appointment necessary.  Limit five boxes per household.”  (Needless to say, we’ll be observing the proceedings closely and with an eye as to how to most safely revive UGS Shred-A-Thons!!)

We’re also feeling mighty good that:

Monday, October 19th:  NYS begins enforcing the Plastic Bag Ban Law!!

(But then you’ve been equipped with and carrying a reusable bag for months, right??!!)

Then things virtual/online of note:

Thursday, October 8th, 7pm:  “Mountain Lions – Uncovering the Mystery”.   With the eastern cougar recently declared extinct, it’s important to understand these fascinating animals as separate from the western populations that have lately been reported in the eastern cougar’s former range.  From the great folks at Hawk Mountain Raptor Sanctuary.  Free but registration is a must!

Wednesday, October 21st, 5pm:   Municipal Art Society 2020 MASterwork Award winner Sari Chang chats about her gorgeous East River Esplanade Bait Station design!!

A library of virtual walks in Central Park

Find that new furry friend on the NYC Animal Care Centers site…

On to some activism:

CM Kallos’s petition to limit the time scaffolding – some 300 miles of it citywide – can remain in place

Got a problematic insect, invasive plant or diseased tree?  Have that troublesomeness  diagnosed by experts at NYC DEC for free!! For how the service works, just go to https://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/79716.html!!

Published in 2019 but even more relevant in these hard financial times:  Why NYC’s transportation infrastructure costs least 3 times more to construct than anywhere else in the world…

Moving on to the Good Citizen file:

There remains an urgent NYC-wide need for blood donation

And for whomever hasn’t yet, PLEASE-PLEASE FILL OUT THAT CENSUS FORM!!

And diversions:

A socially distanced neighborhood walking tour and virtual cribbage via the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum…   Mask advice…  The Times on how to Prepare a Go Bag…  How Andrean condors fly (scroll to page 12 ) …  The “Earth Almanac”…  “What It’s Like To Be A Bird” (scroll down to page 16)…  Why we’ve got to lean in hard on funding for endangered species…  But Mexican seabird restoration gets  stars…  Then there’s Dr. Devi and India’s Greater Adjutant storkA host of animal webcams on the CA Academy of Sciences site…  NYC’s wildlife’s here and not going anywhere, so how about we really welcome those (non-rodent) critters

As we celebrate NYS Climate and Sea Otter Awareness Weeks,

UGS

And for seniors shopping 92nd Street:  We’ll also be giving out Health Bucks while they last…  So, head straight for Market Manager Arlene’s table!!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend.

Margaret”
